Native to the topical Andes forest of western South America. The medical purpose of cinchona were originally discovered by the Quechua people of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Cultivated them as a muscle relaxant to abate shivering to low body temperatures, and symptoms of malaria. The use of the bark has been superseded by more effective medicine but is still recommended for the treatment of malaria.
